We wasted a lot of time and money in Iraq depleted our resources and reduced, any chances we may have had.

I think that it is a failed war=like Vietnam. The fact is you are fighting men that are in tune with their environment and also with the locals that are either against you or with you. The only reason the US is in Afghanistan is because of the oil.I think that Australia and the UK and the US pull out and help the country get back on its feet, not blowing it to pieces and at the same time losing lives.

What was the mission objective again?? Start America # 2 ? Its just not going to happen, their way of life is death and war over their. Theres no way their going to accept civilian life. For thousands of years (no joke) Its kill as many as you can before they kill you. Its huge mess over their. Depending on who gets voted in to pres, we might have to wait a little longer or we will pull out sooner.

We are not fighting the Afghans, we are fighting the Islamic extremists that are out to kill each and every man woman and child in this world who is not Muslim. They do not believe in equal rights for women, or capitalism or many of the freedoms we have every day.

Well, afghanistan is a complicated cnty, its dificult to understand the talibans.we all can see,its been almost 7 years since the invasion of afghanistan, but the american and nato troops have aparently failed to defeat the talibans, and the taliban wont stop.So acording to me,i think taliban wont stop, until the USA negotiates with talibans. And yes USA wud ve to pull out from afghanistan sooner or later.

Every nation that has occupied Afghanistan in the end has left defeated. Even the mighty Russian war machine went. We will go in just the same way.

I'm glad our military doesn't have the same mindset as our citizens… What ever happened to having faith in your military? Just because the Afghanistan and Iraq war weren't overnight successes it's time to cut and run, right?
Yeah, we've lost many of our military men and women, but it's a cold brutal fact of war. Tally up our losses to theirs and see who should be backing down. If they don't back down, we'll just end up killing them all.

Yes we are going to win . all we really have over there now is SF and they are kicking ass,but don't have the numbers .. once we get a rotation of units and battalions like we have in Iraq its over for them . and we'll just use the Iraqis we trained to infiltrate, and help .. we are the strongest army ever . we aren't Russia , Alexander the great or Khan .. once we get a stronghold of the country , our allies we be right there .. and we already have NATO ..

i don't think we will succeed in Afghanistan because the taliban belive what they are fighting for another reason why we wont win is because the taliban dont have any uniform, they can blend in with the local population easily, they also no the terrain so they have the advantage.
so basically the are motivated cowards

Correction, the Afghan people have been beaten. Both by the Mongols and the British.

August 19th commemorates the Treaty of Rawalpindi in 1919. The treaty granted independence from Britain. It is called 'Istiqlal' day - Independence Day. Why have an Independence day if there was no one to gain Independence from?

Additionally, Genghis Khan did not fail, the Moghul Dynasty went on to have a capital in Kabul (Named after Kublai Khan) and establish an empire in Afghanistan.

Unlike any of the other 'invaders' the US doesn't want to take over Afghanistan, it's simply not worth it.

Note, Pashtuns are a plurality, not a majority. They make up 39%(1) of the population, meaning that the 60% majority is not Pashtun. However, even if 39% of Afghanistan is Pushtun, only a small fraction of that population is either involved in or in support of the Taliban.

So it's likely that more than 80% of the country wants peace and stability.

Victory in Afghanistan means a stable federal government that can, with the aid of a multi-national task force, monitor if not completely wipe out militant organizations attempting to find a safe haven in Afghanistan. Keeping them off balance and on the run means less time for Al Queda to actually make plans to attack the United States again.

It also means that there would be a marked decrease in the opium trade, again with a stable federal government that can both encourage alternatives to poppy growers and can severely hamper the efforts of the drug traffickers.

In addition, we must win b/c:

1. Al Queda is fueled by our failure, our inability to effectively deal with them in a country such as Afghanistan makes our military and intelligence agencies look inept and our resolution in fighting the war on terror questionable.

2. Al Queda is still able to use Afghanistan as a staging ground for terror towards our allies in Pakistan etc. This engenders anger not only at Al Queda, but at the governments of those countries that are our allies, making it more difficult for any government to aid the US. (2)

3. Globally, the downward spiral in Afghanistan is fueling the drug trade, thereby increasing the amount of illegal activity associated with drug trafficking on a world-wide level that affects countries that are not involved in Afghanistan at all but who are, unfortunately, affected by the fall out of increased heroin.
