Has the US Military ever had a base or any reason to be in MONGOLIA?

mongolia
sisofphil asked:

this I 'm dating claims be raised in Mongolia for 10 years, where his father assumed the army has met with his mother Mongolian. I think that number might be a pathological liar. Anyone who ever was there who was willing in the military of the United States, or you never heard them talk about soldiers going to the freaking MONGOLIA?

I've not heard of it. And I'm pretty sure China would most certainly not allow that.

Actually in recent months the Oregon Army National Guard has forged a strong military relationship with Mongolia, but that is only recently.

Not a base yet, but talk about it. I wouldn't believe your BF but I suppose it is possible.

We were there before WWII started and there just after the war ended. There is an embassy in Mongolia. Maybe he was there.

ROFLMAO

Mongolia is a part of the People's Republic of China. I can faithfully promise you we've never had any bases there in the past 62 years. (End of WWII)

High ranking military missions in the form of diplomacy or observing exercises maybe, but the story you were fed is 100% USDA BS.

No there is no publicly known base in mongolia but a strong reason to have one. the reason is hegemony.
united states is the hegemonic power in asia and whoever said that china would have a problem with a base in mongolia, well there is nothing they can do about it.
usa already has numerous bases surrounding south of china.
but it is doubtful that US can maintain a discreet military base in mongolia without china making noise.
so i would say that he is lying.

The only way his dad could have been in Mongolia was as a military attache with the United States embassy in Ulan Bataar, the likelihood of which is probably the same as finding rabbits on the farside of the moon.

And considering Mongolia was very, very staunchly Communist and under the Soviet sphere of influence til 1989 (the Soviets stationed 12 divisions in Mongolia to counter the entire Chinese military) that's to remind you that at the time your current boyfriend was likely born, there were NO US bases in Mongolia.

If I were you I'd cut slingload and ditch this loser immeditely.

EDIT: Thank you for the history lesson (to those below) but I sincerely doubt this Questioner is dating a 70+ year old.

We sure did have military in Mongolia. During World War II the US Navy operated a weather stations in the Gobi Desert.

There was a movie made about these guys back in the 1950's called Operation Gobi. Here's a short excerpt from a Time Magazine article about the movie and the real navy weathermen………

Destination Gobi (20th Century-Fox) is a run-of-the-range western with a Far East setting. The picture is based on a real incident: during World War II, the U.S. Navy maintained teams of weather observers in the Gobi Desert to assemble meteorological data for the Pacific theater of war. As a gesture of good will, one of these weather units had 90 saddles flown in from the U.S. and parachuted on to the desert for Mongolian plainsmen.

I am getting old but remember at one time we sent an army into russia and fought there, I think this was about the time of the revolution. 20s maby,, dont know if they went into mongolia, ask what service he was in.the only service that i believe would have a base there for any length of time would be the airforce.also hard to believe any one would be stationed in a post for more than 3 years in a place like that.

Actually we did have Navy personnel stationed in the Gobi desert of Mongolia during World War 2 after the 'jet stream' was discovered to give weather info to allied air crews flying inside China. Additionally, since Mongolia is a pro western and US ally we also have had aircraft and personnel stationed there when China conducted above ground nuclear tests to get air samples that would tell the type of weapon denotated. Otherwise, the only military personnel to get stationed there would be the US Marines who provide embassy security and maybe a military attache usually an officer for liasion with the Mongol military and aid, military type, assistance.

Hope this info helps.
