he was famous because he came out of the middle of nowhere Mongolia and made an empire as large if not larger than Alexander the great. he was a great military commander, using strategies and unique siege equipment he picked up from various parts of his vast empire.

all you need to know:

Mongolia: a huge desert with families moving around, trying to survive. horses are a family's most valuable posession because they are useful and provide food (milk).

Genghis Khan: his real name is Temujin. when he was a kid, thieves took his family's horses. he got all pissed and went around the Mongolian desert, gathering a bunch of followers. eventually he united all the clans in Mongolia and became their leader, and earned the title "Genghis Khan".

with his army of riders, Genghis was able to take over the entire continent of Asia, and most of Europe. he was even able to take over China, the most influential country back then (he was able to take over because the Chinese didn't protect their borders- they were too busy being artistic fags).

he was ruthless. he'd destroy cities, and kill innocent ppl. he let up a little bit when his adviser told him to start taxing the Chinese instead of killing them. he was still an asshole. the Chinese hated the Mongols (b/c the Chinese hated being told what to do by foreigners, and b/c the Mongols smelled like bad cheese and horse.)

likewise, Genghis hated the Chinese, denied them any good jobs, and banned some of their most highly-held traditions (foot binding, etc.) i think he banned inter-racial marriage too, (Chinese-Mongol). but i'm not sure. at any rate, the rest of the world was afraid of his army too.

eventually the Mongols got tired of conquering the whole world (they could have continued if they wanted to) and just went back to Mongolia.

IN SHORT:
he united Mongolian tribes, took over Europe and Asia, led the biggest empire in the world, and today no one gives a shit about Mongolia. lol
