kathedsall asked:

hello. i have taken a genetic analysis on my Y chromosome and i share 5 genetic markers with Genghis khan, 4 with Jefferson and 3 with Niall of the nine hostages. clearly, i am not descended from any of these men but could i be distantly related to them in any way? what does sharing these specific genetic markers mean?

It means you could have some pretty cool ancestors!

You should have gotten the DYS (short for DNA Y-chromosome Segment) and the value ( number of Short Tandem Repeats at that DYS locus). So you take those and enter them into a database you can search like Ancestry, com or ysearch.org, then hit the search button. The result will tell you what your results mean by naming your genetic cousins by surname and genetic distance.

You will probably share some matches with everyone. These men must have tested with the same DNA company as you, or the values will need to be modified. Not all DNA tests use the same methods.

True you'd only be a direct descendant from any one of them if you share at least twelve of the same DNA markers. I guess it means that you are descended from some of the same ancestral groups as any of them. Did you try asking in the forums of the company who did the DNA testing?
