Moving like a Mongol: What is the best way to get around Russia?
Andrew W asked:
I am planning a long journey to explore Russia and the rest of Central Asia and the self needs some advice. I want to virtually travel the expanse of Russia, starting in the south of Murmansk header with some of the major cities in Kazakhstan and then through Russia and central Mongolia, finally ending in Vladivostok. I had in mind the trains, but air travel in economy would be better and it is possible (or advisable) to rent a car and drive, or that would be a very bad? I want to be absent from geralmente beaten path and visit the Russian cities that are not so well known. This would be done during the summer. You can do that kind of trip in 3 months time? Would appreciate any advice from anyone who had done something simillar or who had knowledge of the stroke within the previous Soviet Union. You can rent cars?

Trains, trains, trains. There's no such thing as economy air travel for foreigners in Russia. It's all really expensive. Trains are cheap, safe, comfortable and brilliant fun. I went from Vladivostok to Tallinn by train and it was amazing. Flying means you miss loads of scenery and loads of partying. You'll need to read Cyrillic and know a reasonable amount of Russian to get the most out of the experience, but that's my advice.
As for hiring a car, I'm not sure. I would guess it would be quite a hassle with plenty of bureaucracy to wade through but on that I don't really know.
Good luck.
May be better to go from Vladivostok or Kamchatka
if you really want to see the country, and be adventrous hire a cab (flag down a ride) to take you as far as you can. You'll see the local sites and stay well off any beaten path.
