What is the difference between an Action game and an Adventure game?
KS asked:
Especially when they are two separate categories, not like Action/Adventure. i have seen games be categorized as one or the other, sometimes both. but what is the difference?

Action games are mainly have action(as the title suggest), whereas Adventure games have a lot of puzzle and riddle solving and much less action.
An action game usually has alot of fighting and many controls to it. But an adventure game is almost like a quest for something. It doesnt always have fighting in it.
action games are mainly based upon war etc but adventure games have a good story line
in action games, everything's more focused on fighting and learning fighting skills for battles. adventure games are basically about a story you have to finish. but usually, adventure games are mixed with an action, where the battles serve as obstacles from solving the problem.
Examples for Action games: (More action, less talk)
- Resident evil 4.
- Gears of war.
- Devil may cry.
Examples for Adventure games *which is my favorite*: (More talk, less action)
- Broken sword series.
- The longest journey + Dreamfall.
- Indigo prophecy (or) Fahrenheit.
