Mongolia has only 2,671,000 people in 1,564,116 sq.km. = 1.708 per sq.km, mainly because of an inhospitable climate and inhospitable terrain. The Gobi Desert is a cold desert and covers the southern part of the country, with cold and mountainous regions to the north and west. How cold? Ulan Bator has the lowest average temperature of any national capital in the world. Mongolia is high, cold, and windy. It has an extreme continental climate with long, cold winters and short summers and is subject to occasional harsh climatic conditions known as zud. Most of the country is hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter, with January averages dropping as low as -30°C (-22°F).
The country has poor rangeland, easily destroyed by overgrazing, and agricultural production is very limited by the harsh climate.

Technically Greenland is the most sparsely populated country. It is now autonomous, so we can no longer eliminate it from consideration as a part of Denmark.
57,000 people in 2,175,600 sq.km.= 0.026 per sq.km.

Because it is tucked away above China and constantly experience extreme cold weather.

I also wonder whether it has something to do with what the people from the East favouring having male children over female. Because many parent want to have male child to carry on the family line.

So there are not enough of marriageable female when they reached those age. So the next generation has less children than the previous and the cycle continues for many generations.

Therefore, Mongolia has less people than other country of similiar geography.

one of the reasons for that is probably position of this country, landlocked and not really on some trade path.

Because the terrain is difficult for people to live and make a living on.

And would you want to be sandwiched in between China and Russia? - I wouldn't!

Hope this helps!
